Diogenes J. Angelakos

Biography

Diogenes J. Angelakos, served for four decades as a professor at the Berkeley campus and was recognized as an expert on the complex nature of the scattering of electromagnetic waves as well as on the design of wireless antennas.

Serving as director of the Electronic Research Laboratory at Berkeley from 1964 to 1985, he was widely credited with building the small departmental research group into one of the university's largest research laboratories. He retired in 1990.

In 1982 Dr. Angelakos was injured in a bombing at the university that investigators determined was the work of the serial bomber known as the "Unabomber." He survived the blast and went on to make an almost complete physical recovery. Three years later, a Berkeley graduate student, John E. Hauser, was badly injured by another bombing attributed to the Unabomber. Dr. Angelakos was one of the first on the scene after that explosion.

Dr. Angelakos was a IEEE Life Fellow and professor emeritus of the University of California at Berkeley.

Dr. Angelakos died on June 7th, 1997.
