Dr. Anthony England is a renowned authority on radiometric remote sensing from space and has made numerous contributions to the field. These include the theory of scatter darkening of microwave brightness in snow, ice, and frozen soil, model-based recovery of soil moisture, synthetic thinned-array radiometers for future spaceborne soil moisture missions and a novel direct-sampling digital radiometer.
An IEEE Fellow, he has served as associate editor of the Journal of Geophysical Research and on the National Research Council's Space Studies Board. Dr. England was a NASA scientist astronaut during the Apollo missions and the early shuttle program, and worked for the U.S. Geological Survey, spending two field seasons in Antarctica. Since 1988 he has held a joint appointment as professor of electrical engineering and computer sciences (EECS) and of atmospheric, oceanic and space sciences at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, where he is associate chair of EECS.
