Captain Joseph N. Wenger was in charge of the codebreaking division of OP-20G from February 1942 to July 1949. During this time, among many other tasks he directed development of codebreaking devices including the American Bombe machines used to break back the German Submarine Enigma ciphered communications. From November 1944 to July 1949 he was head of the Naval Security Group where he was instrumental in developing the Navy's first general purpose, stored program codebreaking computer - Engineering Research Associates’ ATLAS.
